We are offering for you this Beautiful Naive Oil Painting on Canvas. “A charming full-length portrait of a child standing in a landscape. The young well-turned-out subject of this work is depicted carrying a basket of fruit , accompanied by her pets, in this case a bird and very attentive dog. Naive paintings such as this example reflect the tastes and ambitions of the growing middle class and the patronage of itinerant self taught local artists who often worked as ornamental painters or in closely related trades. These naive works display a directness and simplicity in stark contrast to the mainstream academic works of the period. The 1996 exhibition catalogue by James Ayres Two Hundred Years of English Naïve Art, 1700-1900 provides a relevant reference of similar work, as do the portraits displayed in the British Folk Art collection at Compton Verney.
